Top five tea tidbits
Do you like a good piece of trivia as much as we do? This may seem like a no-brainer, but we like bits of tea-related trivia even more. Like many things with a lengthy history, a great deal of legend and myth surrounds the story behind drinking tea. Take, for instance, the legend behind how someone figured out in the first place that if you take leaves from the Camellia sinensis bush and add hot water, you end up with a unique drink. On our website we mention just one such legend: Around 2737 BC, Shennong, the Emperor of China and inventor of Chinese medicine, was drinking a bowl of boiled water when a leaf from a nearby Camellia sinensis bush fell into his drink. He sipped, he liked it, end of story. And we say, who really knows? Isn’t … Continue reading

All about Assam
“Assam is the tea I am the most proud of in our entire range,” two leaves and a bud CEO and founder Richard Rosenfeld says. “It’s a great sweet, tippy, malty, but organic Assam, and it’s an ongoing project with me. Assam is in the Brahmaputra River Valley, which means the water that flows through Assam is from the Tibetan plain, and the soil is rich with nutrients. The tea grown there is in intense heat and humidity, much like in a greenhouse. It’s hard to write about Assam without comparing it to that other famous tea named after a region in … Continue reading

Understanding your customers is a fundamental underpinning of building any business. The more you know about your customers, the more you can provide them with what they need. The world of tea is no exception — tea drinkers are a unique bunch who enjoy and experience their beverage in many ways. At two leaves and a bud, we’ve taken the time to build our understanding of your average leaf tea consumer and make sense of their wants and needs in the marketplace. Here’s three important insights we’ve learned about tea drinkers that can help you build business: Tea drinkers love variety In a recent survey of two leaves and a bud customers, we found the number one reason tea drinkers drink tea (next to the obvious answer of taste) is for tea’s diversity — the endless variety of tastes, colors, … Continue reading

Tips on tasting tea
A scene in the movie “Sideways” has the two main characters sidling up to the bar in a winery’s tasting room. Miles is describing tasting wine to his friend. “Mmmm … a little citrus, maybe some strawberry … passion fruit … oh, and there’s just like the faintest soupcon of like asparagus and just a flutter of like a nutty, Edam cheese …” I think of that scene whenever it’s time to taste tea around here, because having such a finely-tuned palate is a trait that’s revered among the food and beverage crowd. But alas, that’ll never be me. A lot of people out there think they’re cursed with a poor palate and tastebuds without much memory, so I approached our CEO, Richard Rosenfeld, about learning the art of tasting tea. “The best tea tasters spend their entire day tasting … Continue reading
