Tasting Tea

Similar to professional wine tasters, tea tasters perfect their palettes though years of training and simply though experience. In order to enjoy and experience the full taste of tea, take in the deep aromas as you sip (similar to the way you would do with wine), and...slurp! While it might normally be considered impolite, for profession tea tasters in Asia, slurping is actually considered a necessary and polite way to enjoy your tea. Slurping slightly cools the tea and runs the tea completely over the palette in order to take in the full complexity of great whole leaf tea.

Each tea possesses a top note, middle note and a finish. Many of the same terms that are used to describe wines are used to evaluate teas. Some of these may be familiar: astringency, body, earthy, full, heavy, pungent, malty, woody, and many others.
