California Proposition 65 warning
What is the California Proposition 65 warning?
California's Proposition 65 requires warning labels on any product that may expose consumers to lead, a chemical known to the State of California to cause cancer and reproductive harm. The presence of lead is due to naturally occurring trace amounts found in certain plant-based ingredients used in this product. Lead is present in soil and can be absorbed by plants as they grow. California’s conservative Prop 65 has a very low exposure threshold, which requires a warning. The product is made in compliance with applicable federal safety standards.
Where does the lead come from?
Lead occurs naturally in the environment and is commonly present at low levels in soil and water. As a result, botanical and plant-based ingredients can naturally absorb trace amounts of lead as they grow. These ingredients are not intentionally contaminated, and no lead is added during manufacturing.
Why does this product require a warning?
Proposition 65 has some of the strictest limits in the country, and a warning is required even when the exposure level is very low and within ranges commonly found in plant-based foods.
We routinely test our ingredients and finished products, occasionally production lots contain lead levels that exceed California’s Proposition 65 “safe harbor” exposure threshold, which requires a warning, even though the product may still comply with federal safety standards. Out of an abundance of caution we have chosen to consistently label certain products with this warning.
Is this product safe to consume?
Yes. This product is manufactured following applicable federal food safety and quality standards. Proposition 65 warnings are not a determination that a product is unsafe, but rather, a requirement to inform California consumers when exposures exceed very conservative state thresholds.
Many common foods, including spices, vegetables, and grains, can carry similar warnings in California due to naturally occurring elements.
